D Dubs Reads
I saw the movie for this one first and didn’t really care for it. But the book was recommended to me by a friend of mine, and I thought I’d give it a shot. I’m glad I did, because I really enjoyed it. The pace is very quick, and McCarthy’s writing has a tendency to really suck you in before you know it. It’s a pretty fast read, and very fun.
One thing that I really liked is the lack of quotation marks, along with punctuation marks other than commas or periods. In a way, it makes everything in the book seem as if it is more of a statement than anything else. Another thing that McCarthy does is to start off his chapters so that the reader has no idea which character is being described for a page or so. It adds some kind of mystique to the book.
I will definitely be checking out some more works by McCarthy when I get a chance. And I’ll probably go back and watch the movie again. I imagine it’ll seem a little deeper now that I have more emotional background to bring to it.
4/5 Stars. 309 pages. Published 2005.
